Get quotes based on a survey

For a new boiler or a significant heating job, the most reliable quotes come after a survey, in person or from detailed photos and a video call. An engineer needs to see your current boiler, pipework, gas meter, flue position and hot water arrangement.

Two or three quotes are usually enough to understand the going rate for your job.

What a good quote includes

Check each quote for:

  • The exact boiler make, model and output
  • The manufacturer's warranty and its conditions
  • Whether the system will be cleaned and a filter fitted
  • Which controls are included
  • Any changes to pipework, flue or gas supply
  • Removal of the old boiler, tanks or cylinder
  • Commissioning, registration and building regulations certification
  • A start date, duration and payment terms

Warning signs

Be cautious if you see:

  • No Gas Safe registration number, or one you can't verify
  • Pressure to sign on the spot or a 'today only' discount
  • A request for full payment before work starts
  • A price far below the others with no explanation
  • Vague descriptions such as 'new boiler fitted' with no model

Payment and your rights

Agree payment terms in writing. A deposit for materials on larger jobs is common, with the balance on completion. Avoid paying everything up front.

Under consumer law, services must be carried out with reasonable care and skill. If you sign a contract in your home rather than at the business's premises, you usually have a 14-day cancellation period, though starting work within that time can affect what you pay if you cancel.

Common questions

How many heating quotes should I get?

Two or three is usually enough to compare prices and recommendations.

Should I choose the cheapest quote?

Not automatically. Compare what's included – the boiler model, warranty, cleaning, controls and certification – before deciding.

Is a longer warranty worth paying for?

It can be, but check the conditions. Most require registration and annual servicing to remain valid.
