Why it matters
Badly fitted or poorly maintained gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. That's why, by law, anyone carrying out gas work in homes in Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and Guernsey must be on the Gas Safe Register.
Registered engineers have had their qualifications checked for the specific types of gas work they do. Being registered for one type of work, such as cookers, doesn't automatically cover another, such as boilers.
Check the ID card
Every registered engineer carries a Gas Safe ID card. Check:
- The photo matches the person in front of you
- The licence number and business details
- The expiry date
- The back of the card, which lists the types of gas work they're qualified to do

Check online
You can search for an engineer or business on the Gas Safe Register website using their licence number or business name, and see what they're registered for. It's sensible to check before you accept a quote.
Other registrations you may see
Oil boilers are usually installed and serviced by technicians registered with OFTEC. Electrical work linked to an electric boiler may be done by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme. Gas Safe registration covers gas work only.
