Heating and central heating

Should You Leave the Heating On When You Go Away?

In cold weather, an empty house can freeze. A little heating protects your pipes and boiler – without heating the house as if you were home.

Why it matters

If water in pipes freezes, it expands and can split them. When it thaws, the leak can cause serious damage before anyone notices. Boilers' condensate pipes can also freeze, stopping the boiler from working.

Sensible settings

Before you go away in winter:

  • Use the boiler's or thermostat's frost protection or holiday mode if it has one
  • Alternatively, set the thermostat low and leave the heating on
  • Leave the boiler powered on so its frost protection can work
  • Open loft hatches and cupboard doors where pipes run, to let warmth reach them
  • Know where your stopcock is in case of a leak

Empty properties and second homes

Properties left empty for longer may need draining down or regular checks. Smart thermostats let you monitor and warm a property remotely. Check your home insurance, as policies often have conditions for unoccupied homes.

Common questions

What temperature should I leave the heating on when away?

A low setting – many people use around 7–12°C – or the frost setting, depending on your system and the weather.

Should I turn the boiler off when on holiday in winter?

Generally no. Leaving it on allows frost protection to work.

What should I do if a pipe bursts?

Turn off the water at the stopcock, switch off electrics near the leak if safe, and call a plumber or heating engineer.
