Free or low-cost changes
Start with the simple things:
- Turn the thermostat down a degree and see if you notice
- Use the timer so the heating isn't on when nobody's home
- Turn down radiator valves in rooms you rarely use
- Close curtains at dusk and keep radiators clear of furniture
- Draught-proof doors, windows and letterboxes
- Bleed radiators that are cold at the top
Boiler settings
Many combi boilers are set to send water to the radiators hotter than necessary. Lowering the heating flow temperature can help a condensing boiler run more efficiently, though rooms may take a little longer to warm up. Systems with a hot water cylinder need care, as stored hot water should stay hot enough to be safe.

Jobs for a heating engineer
An annual service keeps the boiler running efficiently. Cleaning a sludged-up system, balancing radiators, adding thermostatic radiator valves or upgrading controls can all improve comfort and help the boiler work less hard.
