Where CO comes from

Carbon monoxide can be produced when fuels such as gas, oil or solid fuel don't burn properly. Faulty, poorly installed or unserviced appliances, and blocked flues or chimneys, increase the risk.

Signs to look out for

Warning signs include:

  • Headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness or tiredness that ease when you go outside
  • Several people or pets in the home feeling unwell at once
  • Black or brown staining on or around appliances
  • A lazy yellow or orange flame on older appliances that should burn blue
  • Excess condensation in the room

Staying safe

Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm that meets the relevant standard in rooms with fuel-burning appliances, test it regularly and have appliances serviced annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If you suspect CO, turn off appliances if safe, open doors and windows, get everyone outside into fresh air, call the gas emergency number – 0800 111 999 in Great Britain, 0800 002 001 in Northern Ireland – and seek medical advice.

Common questions

Do I need a CO alarm with a gas boiler?

It's strongly recommended, and in some situations, such as new installations and rented homes, alarms are required.

Where should a CO alarm go?

Follow the manufacturer's instructions, typically in the same room as the appliance at a set distance from it.

Can a new boiler produce CO?

Any fuel-burning appliance can if faulty, which is why correct installation and servicing matter.
