Do this immediately
If you smell gas:
- Turn off the gas at the meter using the emergency control valve, if it's safe to do so
- Open doors and windows to let fresh air in
- Don't use electrical switches, doorbells or anything that could cause a spark
- Don't smoke or use naked flames
- Leave the property and call the gas emergency number from outside
The emergency numbers
In Great Britain, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. In Northern Ireland, call 0800 002 001. The service is free and available 24 hours a day.

Afterwards
The emergency service will make the situation safe but doesn't usually repair appliances. Any repairs to gas appliances or pipework must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer before the supply is turned back on.
