Gas boilers

Boiler Efficiency Ratings Explained

New boilers come with an energy label. Here's what it tells you – and what it doesn't.

Energy efficiency label with ratings from A to G beside a gas boiler

The energy label

Boilers sold in the UK carry an energy label showing their efficiency class for space heating and, for combis, hot water. Most new condensing gas boilers achieve an A rating for heating, so the label alone doesn't separate most models.

What really affects efficiency

Real-world efficiency depends on more than the label:

  • Correct boiler sizing for the home
  • Flow temperature settings that let it condense
  • Good controls, such as a programmable thermostat and TRVs
  • A clean system with inhibitor and a filter
  • Regular servicing

Comparing boilers

When comparing quotes, look at the boiler's output range, the warranty, the controls included and how easy it is to service. A well-installed mid-range boiler can perform as well in practice as a premium one installed poorly.

Common questions

Are all new gas boilers condensing?

New gas boilers fitted in the UK have generally had to be condensing boilers since the mid-2000s.

Is an A-rated boiler always efficient?

Only if it's sized, installed and set up properly.

Do controls affect the rating?

Adding certain controls can improve the overall system rating.
