Column Radiators: Pros and Cons

Column radiators are popular for their traditional look and generous output. Here's what to weigh up before choosing them.

The advantages

Column radiators offer:

  • A classic look that suits period and modern homes
  • Good heat output for their footprint, especially with more columns
  • A wide range of heights, lengths and colours
  • Even, pleasant heat across a large surface

The drawbacks

They usually cost more than panel radiators, they can be harder to clean between the columns, and cast-iron versions are very heavy when full of water. They can also hold more water, so they take a little longer to warm up.

Steel or cast iron?

Steel column radiators are lighter, cheaper and heat up faster. Cast iron holds heat longer and has an authentic period feel, but needs strong walls or floor-standing feet. Both must be sized for the room's heat loss.

Common questions

Are column radiators more efficient?

No radiator is more efficient as such – they release the heat they receive. Columns can give more output for their size.

Can column radiators be wall-mounted?

Many steel ones can. Heavy cast iron often sits on feet.

Do column radiators suit modern homes?

Yes, in contemporary colours and sizes.
