Heated Towel Rails Explained

A towel rail dries towels and adds warmth to a bathroom. Choosing the right type depends on whether you want it to work when the heating's off.

The three main types

Towel rails come in three main types:

  • Central heating: connected to your radiators, works when the heating is on
  • Electric: has its own element, works independently
  • Dual fuel: connected to the heating with an added electric element for summer use

Will it heat the bathroom?

Many towel rails give out less heat than a panel radiator of a similar size, especially when covered in towels. In a cold bathroom, check the output carefully or consider a radiator alongside the rail.

Installation and safety

Electric and dual-fuel rails need a suitable electrical connection, and bathrooms have specific electrical safety rules, so the electrical work should be done by a qualified electrician. Wet rails are fitted by a heating engineer like any radiator.
