Hydrogen-Ready Boilers: What They Are and Whether You Need One

You'll see 'hydrogen blend ready' on many new boiler brochures. It sounds futuristic, but for most households it shouldn't be the deciding factor when choosing a boiler. Here's why.

The terms explained

There are two different labels, and they mean quite different things. A 'hydrogen blend ready' boiler can run on natural gas mixed with up to 20% hydrogen. Most modern gas boilers sold in the UK already meet this standard, often without any change in price. A '100% hydrogen-ready' boiler is designed to be converted, by an engineer, to run on pure hydrogen if the gas network were ever switched over. These have been developed and trialled, but aren't widely sold.

Where the UK stands on hydrogen heating

Hydrogen was once seen as a possible way to keep using gas boilers while cutting carbon. Since then, several village trials were scaled back or cancelled, and independent reviews have concluded that hydrogen is likely to play, at most, a limited role in home heating. A government decision on any wider role has been repeatedly delayed. The main government support for low-carbon home heating is for heat pumps and heat networks.

In practice, that means you shouldn't buy a boiler expecting to switch it to hydrogen during its lifetime.

Should it affect which boiler you buy?

For most people, no. Choose a boiler on reliability, efficiency, warranty, the right output for your home and a good installer. If the model you like happens to be 20% hydrogen blend ready – which most are – that's fine, but it isn't a reason to pay more.

Looking further ahead

If you want your next heating system to be future-proof, the options with the clearest support are heat pumps, hybrid systems and, in some areas, heat networks. A new gas boiler fitted today will likely last 10–15 years. When it's time to replace it, it's worth looking at the alternatives then. See heat pumps vs gas boilers and how long gas boilers last.

Common questions

What is a hydrogen-ready boiler?

A boiler that can run on a blend of natural gas and up to 20% hydrogen, or one designed to be converted to pure hydrogen later.

Are all new boilers hydrogen-ready?

Most new UK gas boilers are 20% hydrogen blend ready. 100% hydrogen-ready models are rare.

Will my home be switched to hydrogen?

There are currently no plans for widespread switching of homes to hydrogen in the UK.

Should I pay more for a hydrogen-ready boiler?

Generally no. Choose on reliability, efficiency, warranty and installer quality.

Is hydrogen better than a heat pump?

Current evidence and government policy favour heat pumps for home heating.
