Moving a boiler can free up space or put it somewhere more practical. It's a bigger job than a straight swap, so here's what to expect.

What has to change

A new position usually needs:

  • A new gas supply pipe, sized correctly for the boiler
  • New flow and return pipework, and hot and cold water on a combi
  • A compliant flue route from the new position
  • A condensate pipe to a suitable drain
  • An electrical supply and connections to controls

Cost and timing

Moving a boiler adds labour and materials compared with a like-for-like swap. It's often done when the boiler is being replaced anyway. Your engineer will check the flue rules for the new position before quoting.

Common questions

Can a boiler go anywhere?

Only where a compliant flue route, gas supply, condensate drainage and service access are possible.

Do I need permission to move a boiler?

Building regulations apply; your Gas Safe engineer can usually self-certify. Leaseholders and listed buildings may need extra consent.

How long does moving a boiler take?

Often two to three days with a replacement.
