Gas boilers

Can a Boiler Go in the Loft?

Fitting a boiler in the loft frees up space in the house. It's possible, but it needs to be done properly.

Gas boiler fitted in a boarded loft with a light and a loft ladder

What's needed

A loft boiler typically requires:

  • A fixed loft ladder for safe access
  • Boarding from the hatch to the boiler and around it
  • A fixed light near the boiler
  • A way to check pressure and reset it, sometimes remote controls downstairs
  • Frost protection for the boiler, pipes and condensate
  • A suitable flue route, often through the roof

Pros and cons

Loft boilers free up kitchen or cupboard space and can be quieter. On the other hand, they're harder to reach for checks and servicing, leaks may go unnoticed, and frost protection is essential. Loft conversions in the future would need the boiler moved.
