Radiators

Do Radiator Covers and Furniture Block Heat?

Radiators heat a room mainly by warming the air around them. Anything that blocks that air can make a room colder.

Sofa pushed against a radiator, trapping the heat behind it

How radiators heat a room

Despite the name, most radiators heat mainly by convection: air is warmed as it passes over the radiator and rises, drawing cooler air in from below. Blocking that circulation reduces how much heat reaches the room.

Common culprits

Heat can be held back by:

  • Sofas and beds pushed against radiators
  • Radiator covers with small openings
  • Shelves directly above the radiator
  • Long, heavy curtains hanging in front
  • Clothes drying on the radiator

Making it work

Leave a gap between furniture and radiators where you can. If you use a cover, choose one with a generous open front and top. Thermostatic valves also need free air around them, or they may switch off too early.

Common questions

Do radiator covers reduce efficiency?

They can reduce heat reaching the room, depending on the design.

How much gap should I leave behind a sofa?

As much as practical – even a small gap helps air move.

Is drying clothes on radiators a problem?

It reduces heat output and adds moisture to the air.
