Radiator Reflector Panels: Do They Work?

Reflective panels behind radiators are a low-cost idea that can help in the right situation. Here's where they make sense.

What they do

A reflector panel is a thin sheet, usually foil-faced, fitted to the wall behind a radiator. It reflects some radiant heat back into the room and reduces the heat that soaks into the wall behind.

Where they help most

They're most useful on uninsulated outside walls, such as solid brick walls in older homes, where heat would otherwise be lost to the outside. On internal walls, the heat warms the next room anyway, so the benefit is smaller.

Fitting them

Fitting is usually simple:

  • Turn the heating off and let the radiator cool
  • Cut the panel to size, around the brackets
  • Slide it behind the radiator and fix it to the wall
  • Make sure it doesn't touch the radiator itself

Common questions

How much difference do they make?

A modest one, mostly on uninsulated outside walls.

Can I use kitchen foil?

Purpose-made panels are better, as they're designed to stay in place and last.

Do I need to remove the radiator?

Usually not.
