Radiators

Do You Need Bigger Radiators for a Heat Pump?

Heat pumps run at lower water temperatures than most gas boilers. To keep rooms warm, some radiators need to be larger.

Why size matters

A radiator's output drops as its water temperature falls. Heat pumps are most efficient producing lower-temperature water, so a radiator that heats a room comfortably on a gas boiler may struggle with a heat pump.

Not every radiator needs changing

A room-by-room heat-loss calculation shows which radiators are big enough already. Many homes only need a few upgraded, often in rooms with large windows or several outside walls.

  • Double-panel, double-convector radiators give more output
  • Wider or taller radiators add surface area
  • Underfloor heating suits low temperatures well

A benefit for boilers too

Larger radiators can also help a condensing gas boiler, letting it run at a lower flow temperature while still heating the home.

Common questions

Do I have to replace all my radiators for a heat pump?

Usually not – often only some.

Are special heat pump radiators needed?

Not necessarily – correctly sized standard radiators can work.

Will bigger radiators fit my walls?

Engineers consider available space when choosing sizes.
